Should You Give Your Dog Human Food?

At VetIQ, we’re proud to offer a wide range of pet health supplements designed to help you keep your pet happy and healthy. But while supplements like hip & joint and skin & coat supplements are important, they’re far from the only factor in keeping your pet healthy. Diet is one of the most critical elements of any cat or dog’s well-being, and it also presents a dilemma: is it ok to give your dog human food?

The Fine Line of Feeding Your Dog

Most pet owners would agree that generally speaking, a dog should stick to their own food. But feeding a dog human food can be tempting – especially when they’ve perfected their puppy dog eyes!

While opinions differ, human food isn’t completely off-limits for dogs. What matters is the kind of human food you give them and the way in which you give it to them. Some human foods are perfectly fine for dogs, and in fact many are even healthier than regular dog food: grilled salmon, cooked eggs, and even carrots all make perfectly healthy snacks for dogs. However, it’s important to do your research, as many human foods pose a threat to dogs. Grapes, chocolate, and macadamia nuts are all foods that are fine for humans but can be highly toxic to dogs.

Furthermore, it’s important to be careful with how you give your dog human food. For example, if you feed your dog human food when they beg from the dinner table, this only encourages the begging behavior: your dog will learn that if they persistently whine and beg at the table, they’ll get food. Instead, give your pup human food only as a special treat or to reward particularly good behavior.

As with all things, the key with dogs and human food is moderation. A bit of human food as a special treat once in a while can be perfectly fine for a dog – just make sure not to overdo it. And as always, don’t forget to give your dog the pet health supplements they need to live a full, happy, and healthy life. We encourage you to contact us if you have questions about your pup’s diet or health supplement needs.
