  • What is VetGuard® Plus for Dogs and how does it work?

VetGuard® Plus for Dogs is a triple action formula that kills adult fleas & ticks, prevents eggs and larvae from becoming adults and prevents new pests from your dog.

VetGuard® Plus contains two active ingredients:Permethrin and Pyriproxyfen (Nylar). Permethrin is an insecticide/matricide that kills and repels adult fleas, lice, and ticks. When applied, it disperses in the pet’s natural skin oils into the sebum, protecting your dog. Pyriproxyfen (or Nylar) is an Insect Growth Regulator or IGR that is particularly effective at preventing eggs and larvae from develop into infection spreading adults.

  • If my dog already has fleas and ticks will it kill them?

Yes. The Permethrin in VetGuard® Plus for Dogs is a fast-acting pesticide and repellent of fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, biting flies, mites, and lice. Following application, the medicine spreads across the skin surface of the dog and dissolves into the skin. When the pyrethroids reach the hair follicle, they tightly bind to the hair shaft and remain there. Permethrin requires contact of the insect with the chemical compound to repel them. The compound is absorbed through the cuticle of the parasite and exerts a toxic effect on the nerves of the parasite, acting as a noxious stimulus, causing a flushing effect where the fleas become hyperactive. Ticks will exhibit a “hot foot” behavior, scurrying across the animal, eventually falling off and dying.

  • How does VetGuard® Plus for Dogs compare to other flea and tick products for killing, preventing and repelling fleas and ticks?

Based on the evaluation of twelve popular flea and tick control products by IVS (Information Verification Services), an independent organization that offers objective product evaluations based on approved EPA claims, VetGuard® Plus rates #1 for its ability to kill, prevent and repel fleas, ticks and other pests.

  • What is the difference between VetGuard® Plus and Frontline Plus?

VetGuard® Plus effectively kills adult fleas and ticks, and eggs and larvae, as does Frontline Plus. VetGuard® Plus has the added benefit of repelling these parasites. The Permethrin in VetGuard® Plus is a fast acting insecticide which spreads across the dog’s skin and exerts a toxic effect on the nerves of the parasites once they come in contact with the dog’s skin. This causes them to fall off and die before feeding can occur. VetGuard® Plus will also repel mosquitoes and biting flies, but does require contact by the parasites before being repelled. Frontline uses S-(methopreme) while VetGuard® Plus has an IGR of pryiproxyfen which prevents flea eggs fleas from developing into biting adults. VetGuard® Plus sells for a just a fraction of the cost of Frontline Plus.

  • How does VetGuard® Plus compare to Bayer K9 Advantix?

VetGuard® Plus and Bayer K9 Advantix have Permethrin to kill and repel fleas, lice and ticks and Pyriproxyfen to inhibit the growth of fleas to stop a flea infestation. VetGuard® Plus provides triple action flea and tick control — killing, repelling and preventing pests for just a fraction of the cost of K9 Advantix.

  • Will VetGuard® Plus for Dogs take care of all my flea problems?

No. As with all flea and tick control products, VetGuard® Plus for Dogs should be used as part of a program aimed at reducing flea populations in the dog’s environment (bedding, carpets, kennel, and yard). VetGuard® Plus will kill fleas on the dog, but not those that are in his bedding, carpets or yard, as they are only exposed to VetGuard® Plus if they are on the dog and come in contact with the product.

VetGuard® Plus will also kill flea eggs and larvae on the dog, thus preventing them from becoming adults and reproducing. It will not stop them from multiplying in the environment around the dog. We recommend that you replace or treat your dog’s bedding, and treat your carpets and yard with products that will kill fleas in those areas. Consult your veterinarian, entomologist, or retailer for program recommendations.

  • How do I apply VetGuard® Plus for Dogs to my dog?

VetGuard® Plus for Dogs is available for dogs ranging in various weight ranges. Make sure that you purchase the correct dosage for your pet’s size. Do not administer VetGuard® Plus for Dogs weighing less than 5 lbs. VetGuard® Plus for Dogs should be applied to the skin at three different locations along the dog’s back between the shoulder blades and base of the tail. It is important that the product is applied to the dog’s skin and not just dispersed through the dog’s hair. Make sure you read the label instructions under “Directions for Use” before applying VetGuard® Plus for Dogs on your dog.

Instructions: Remove product tube from package. Holding tube upright, pull off cap. Turn the cap around and place opposite end of cap back on tube. Twist cap to break seal, remove cap from tube. Invert tube over dog and use open end to part dog’s hair. Squeeze tube firmly to apply all of the solution to the dog’s skin in three or more different locations along the dog’s back between the shoulder blades and base of the tail. Wrap tube and put in trash.

  • How often should I apply VetGuard® Plus for Dogs on my dog?

We recommend that you apply VetGuard® Plus for dogs monthly throughout the year. If you frequently bathe your dog, re-application can be made in 3 weeks, but we recommend waiting at least 3 weeks from the time of the last application.

  • How can only a few drops of VetGuard® Plus for Dogs protect my dog from fleas? Shouldn’t it be applied over my dog’s entire body?

VetGuard® Plus for Dogs has ingredients which are carried through the oil in your dog’s coat and skin to kill and repel fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. The application need only be applied as a spot to the skin at three or more different locations along the dog’s back between the shoulder blades base of the tail. VetGuard® Plus for Dogs is absorbed and distributed on the dog by the sebaceous glands (microscopic glands in the skin that secrete an oily/waxy matter called sebum to lubricate and waterproof the skin and fur).

  • Should I bathe my dog before applying VetGuard® Plus for Dogs?

Bathing with a shampoo or soap frequently (more often than once every couple of weeks) could reduce the effectiveness of any spot on product like VetGuard® Plus. It would be better to bathe your dog after applying VetGuard® Plus, but if you bathe your dog before application, wait 24-48 hours to allow the oils to build up and the product to be absorbed. Bathing your dog just before applying the product will actually reduce the speed of transmission of the product because there will be less oils on the dog’s skin.

You can reapply VetGuard® Plus after bathing your dog, however we do not recommend applying more often than once every three weeks.

  • Does VetGuard® Plus for Dogs kill mites, chiggers, and mange?

VetGuard® Plus for Dogs kills and repels all types of mites. However, because mites are known to burrow beneath the skin, if your dog already has mites, you should consult your veterinarian for suggestions for a complete program to eliminate them. (Chiggers are larvae stage of mites, mange is an infestation of mites). VetGuard® Plus is an effective preventative for mites as it will kill and repel them, but if your dog already has mites, it will not treat the infestation.

  • How long does it take for the product to work?

Permethrin must come in contact with the insect to kill it, so until the chemical compound can be absorbed and spread throughout the dog’s skin, you may see fleas or ticks on your pet following application. VetGuard® Plus has demonstrated greater than 92% control of fleas within one day of application. Depending on the size of the dog and the oils on their skin, it may take up to 24 to 48 hours for the product to be absorbed throughout the dog’s skin. Generally, once the fleas or ticks come in contact with the permethrin on the dog’s skin, they should die in less than 4 hours.

  • Is there an expiration date?

No, there is no expiration date on pesticide.
